David D’Addario is an established presence in the bauxite and alumina production industries and leads New Day Aluminum LLC as CEO and chairman. In mid-October, David D’Addario’s firm’s principal owner, DADA Holdings LLC, announced that it was entering into a partnership with Enervoxa, a green technologies enterprise based in Canada.
The new joint venture, ElementUS, will focus on making use of bauxite residue produced at an alumina refinery that New Day operates in Gramercy, Louisiana. Through technology provided by Enervoxa, bauxite residue will be separated into component materials that include 10 of the 17 materials classified as rare earth elements.
In addition, the bauxite residue contains 15 minerals that the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency has identified as being “strategic and critical.” Along with those critical materials found in “unusually high concentrations” in the residue are alumina, iron, and titanium.
Mr. D’Addario described the opportunity presented by this agreement as one that will enable valuable rare earth elements to be efficiently extracted and commercialized. At the same time, deployment of Enervoxa technologies will measurably decrease the alumina refining business’ environmental footprint.
